Unfortunately I do not know of any companies. Though in that field it would be helpful to earn a Master's degree. Not sure how it is in the UK but in the US students can earn a stipend to get their Masters in the marine sciences by working on their professor's grant. So grad school in the sciences can be thought of as a first job where you earn a small salary but get a degree after a couple of years.

That sounds just like the industry he would love to get into I don't suppose you are aware of any companies that he can approach that may be hiring at the moment. Many thanks again for your time

Having studied biomechanical engineering is a great background for pursuing a career in the marine sciences and working on understanding how marine animals move and swim. There is a huge engineering field that is trying to design new and better underwater vehicles that mimic how animals swim (bioinspired vehicles/robots). This means that there are a lot of opportunities for masters and PhD students to study the mechanics of swimming. Hope this helps, good luck!
