Google Science Fair: Join the buzz

Are you aged between 13 and 18? And is your mind blown into tiny fragments of brain shrapnel by the fact that school-aged kids achieved the following:

  • Revolutionised drone flight by imitating the movements of fruit flies?
  • Created a flashlight that runs from the heat of the human hand?
  • Developed a pedal powered refrigeration system for transporting lifesaving vaccines?

Then get involved with the Google Science Fair. Because all of those examples above are from previous award winners.

What is the Google Science Fair?

The Google Science Fair is a worldwide, online science competition that harvests student brain power and ingenuity to make the world a better place. In other words, the competition is all about finding solutions to global problems. If you think you have a humdinger of an idea or invention that will significantly benefit humans or the planet, and you think it can be developed and reliably tested, then you may well be a perfect fit for the Google Science Fair.

What exactly would I be required to do?

  1. Find a problem worth solving
  2. Think up ideas and select the best one
  3. Explore your idea and develop a solution
  4. Experiment and test out your solution
  5. Collect and communicate your results
  6. Wrap up your findings and draw a conclusion.

The specifics of what each of steps involves can be found on the Google Science Fair website.

When can I submit my ideas?

Submissions opened this month (September 2018) and close in December 2018. After submissions are assessed, finalists are announced in April 2019.

Should I enter?

If you have an idea that could change the world, then why not?!

Not to mention, there are amazing prizes on offer; most of which will give your career in science a real “leg up”. You will also improve your career-readiness by developing scientific inquiry and problem-solving related skills.

And, most importantly, you will have an absolute ball as you share your innovative ideas with other lovers of science from around the world.
